• Do I need an appointment for a TB test?

Yes. You need to book ahead so we can plan your two visits: the initial skin test and your follow-up reading 48–72 hours later.

• How much does the TB test cost?

TB Skin Testing is not covered by Alberta Health Care, therefore consultation fees are an out-of-pocket expense.The consultation fee is: $50 per person and includes a health assessment, 1-step TST and completion of form(s).
    • Additional fees apply if a 2-step TST is required.The cost of Tuberculin is in addition to the consultation fee. We can directly bill Tuberculin and vaccinations to many drug benefits plans. Coverage does vary with each plan.The injection fee is included in the consultation fee at the first appointment. Any subsequent appointments for injections will be charged a $20 injection fee per visit.

• Is the TST the same as a TB blood test?

No, the TST (tuberculin skin test) is done in two parts with a small injection and a follow-up reading. Some clinics in bigger cities may offer a TB blood test (IGRA) instead, but most schools and employers in Alberta accept the standard TST.

• What if my TST comes back positive?

A positive skin test doesn’t automatically mean you have active tuberculosis. It means you may have been exposed in the past. If this happens, our healthcare professionals will guide you on next steps, which could include a chest X-ray or follow-up with your doctor.
